Nicaragua, Day Two. A Lagoon and a volcano.

On Saturday we took a day trip with Terry and her friend, Bill to visit some pottery stores and admire the breathtaking views of Laguna Apoyo and Lake Nicaragua.  Laguna Apoyo is a volcanic lake occupying the caldera of an extinct volcano.  We drove up to the village of Catarina where we could see the Laguna as well as Lake Nicaragua (and Granada) in the distance.

Along the way we stopped in a small village known for its pottery.  Not only did we get to see some beautiful pottery, we got taken back to see the potter at work in one of the shops!

The highlight of the trip was a drive into the Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya where they let you drive right up the very active Santiago crater, with its continually oozing lava.   Located in a national park, vehicles are allowed up in small groups starting at sundown.  We got in line behind other parked cars and had a little tailgate party waiting to be let in.
